My hometown Eschweiler is a small city with 60,000 residents in the border triangle of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Due to the downfall of the region’s biggest employer, the coal power plant Weisweiler, and the associated opencast coal mine, the lively city centre of my childhood with shops and restaurants turned into a vacant concrete desert.
